Members and friends of the Shadbush Collective stopped by opening night at the Consol Energy Center.  As throngs of Beatle lovers converged on the brand new arena for a special concert by Paul McCartney, about a dozen of us held a giant banner reading “Our Drinking Water Matters:  Stop Drilling the Marcellus” while distributing hundreds of flyers alerting concert go-ers to Consol’s involvement in destructive long-wall and mountain top removal coal mining practices as well as its subsidiary CNX’s involvement in hydrofacking the Marcellus Shale.

………………….

There’s nothing GREEN about this arena as long as CONSOL’s name is on top of it

Consol Energy’s Attack on our Homes, Land, and Climate!

LONGWALL MINING – Consol Energy is the major longwall mining company in southwestern Pennsylvania.  Longwall mining causes ‘planned subsidence’ that rocks peoples’ homes like an earthquake; sinks streams, springs, and even lakes (Ryerson Lake); and damages public infrastructure.

MARCELLUS SHALE GAS DRILLING – Consol’s subsidiary CNX is a major player in Pennsylvania.

Hydrofracturing (the process used to drill Marcellus wells) uses 1-2.5 million gallons of water for each well.  With over 7000 wells permitted already in PA, where will the water come from?

Each well produces millions of gallons of wastewater, containing high levels of mineral salts, residual radioactivity, and a toxic stew of chemical additives.  There is no wastewater plant in PA that can clean the wastewater – but the drilling goes on, sending the wastewater right back into our water supplies.  HYDROFRACTURING IS EXEMPT FROM THE PROTECTIONS OF THE FEDERAL SAFE DRINKING WATER ACT.

Marcellus drilling is not your fathers’ gas well, it is an intensive industrial operation; homeowners near wells are subject to constant noise, lights, toxic air pollution, and water contamination.  Many now suffer health effects and degraded property values.

COAL WILL NEVER BE CLEAN –

Pittsburgh’s air is the dirtiest in the nation, in large part because of emissions from coal power plants.  This pollution affects us all, increasing the death rate from asthma, heart attacks, and respiratory diseases. Who do you know whose life might be impaired or cut short by dirty energy?

Communities across Pennsylvania suffer increased cancer rates and exposure to heavy metals due to leaching from coal power plant ash dump sites into their drinking water.

There is no realistic plan to keep burning coal without releasing more CO2 into the atmosphere, further triggering global climate change.

DON’T BUY THE LIE!

PITTSBURGHERS DEMAND:

~ A REAL GREEN ECONOMY

~ A CLEAN ENERGY FUTURE THAT IS TRULY SUSTAINABLE

~ HEALTH AND LIFE ABOVE SHORT-TERM PROFITS
